Hike the Graveyard of the Giants Trail in Nelder Grove

Join local expert and author Brenda Negley and Forest Service recreation specialist Cori Hayth.  Hike is 6 miles round trip - moderate to strenuous but with many stops along the way.  This is a hiking tour to observe impacts, fire ecology, and recovery of the vegetation in Nelder Grove after the Railroad Fire of 2017.

Meet at 9 am at Batterson Fire Station. Bring: Backpack to carry lunch, snacks, drinking water, sunscreen, etc. Wear sturdy shoes or boots you don’t mind getting wet/dirty. Brenda cell: 559-760-9108

DIRECTIONS TO MEETING PLACE: Batterson Work Station, 43060 Highway 41, Oakhurst, CA, 93644.

From the south (Fresno, Madera, Oakhurst, North Fork Bass Lake), go 0.6 miles north on Highway 41 past the turn-off to Bass Lake (which is Road 222). At 0.6 miles, turn left from Highway 41 into the US Forest Service Batterson Work Station.

From the north (Yosemite, Fish Camp, etc.): Proceed south on Highway 41, and when you see Cedar Valley Drive on your left, go another 1.3 miles and turn right into Batterson Work Station. Once you’ve turned into Batterson, proceed approx. 0.2 miles up the road to a large parking lot just past a Quonset hut, and turn right into that parking lot. We will have signs to make it clear. This is a good place to consolidate vehicles, and a relatively safe place to leave your vehicle if you ride with someone else. If you get lost or confused, call Brenda’s cell phones (above).
